37 drug courts in existence or being planned in North Carolina. Thirteen drug
courts had been operating for more than 2 years, 16 were recently implemented,
and 8 were being planned at that time.

During 2004, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported making 270 arrests for drug violations in North Carolina. During 2003, there were 44,594 total drug arrests in North Carolina. Of the 36,663 North Carolina prison inmates on June 30, 2005, 5,179 were drug offenders.
The mission of the North Carolina Department of Correction DACDP is to provide comprehensive interventions, programs, and services to help offenders achieve recovery. Examples of DACDP programs include Drug Alcohol Recovery Treatment Program (DART), Residential Substance Abuse Treatment for State Prisoners (RSAT), and therapeutic communities (TC).
During 2000, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported 359 prescription drug thefts.
The Governor's Next Step for Youth Initiative is a comprehensive prevention effort designed to prevent and reduce the use of marijuana, other illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco by North Carolina youth.
