As of September 29, 2005, there
were 30 drug courts in existence or being planned in Indiana. Thirteen drug
courts had been operating for more than 2 years, 11 were recently implemented,
and another 6 were being planned at that time.
During 2004, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) made 391 arrests for drug violations in Indiana. There were 22,648 arrests for drug abuse violations in Indiana during 2004. During 2004, the Indiana State Police made 5,484 arrests for drug abuse violations. The Indiana State Police reported 4,816 drug enforcement charges during 2004.
Powder cocaine is readily available throughout the state, while crack cocaine is primarily available in the urban areas of Indiana. Heroin is not readily available in central or southern Indiana. In northern Indiana, Southeast Asian white heroin has decreased and has been replaced by Mexican brown and black tar heroin. The abuse of marijuana remains a significant problem within Indiana. The influx of methamphetamine into Indiana has been increasing. The abuse of club drugs is not reported to be a significant problem in Indiana.
The Governor's Commission for a Drug-Free Indiana was created in 1989 to develop a comprehensive statewide approach to alcohol and other drug problems. The Commission assists local communities in the development of community plans to address substance abuse issues.
